Starting Early: When and How to Introduce Your Kitten or Puppy to a Raw Diet
Introducing your kitten or puppy to a raw diet can be one of the best decisions you make for their health and well-being. At BOM BOM, we believe in starting early, which allows young pets to benefit from the rich, natural nutrition that a raw diet provides. Kittens can begin this journey as soon as they are weaned from their mother’s milk, typically around six weeks old, while puppies are ready for the transition at eight weeks old.
Advantages of Starting Early
Introducing your kitten or puppy to a raw diet early in life offers several significant benefits:
Steady and Even-Paced Muscle Growth: Raw diets are high in protein, which is essential for developing lean muscle mass. Early introduction helps ensure that muscle growth is consistent and appropriate for their age.
Stronger Bones and Joints: The right balance of nutrients, including calcium and phosphorus, is crucial for skeletal development. A raw diet provides these nutrients in a natural form that supports healthy bone density and joint strength.
Healthier Skin and Fur: A diet balanced in omega fatty acids from high-quality protein sources promotes a shiny coat and healthy skin, reducing the likelihood of skin issues as they grow.
Dental Health: Chewing raw meat and bones helps to naturally clean your pet's teeth, promoting dental health and reducing the risk of dental disease.
Robust Immune System: A balanced raw diet supports the development of a strong immune system, helping your pet fend off illnesses as they explore the world around them.
How to Introduce Raw Food
Direct Transition Approach:
Starting your puppies and kittens on a raw diet can be a seamless transition! Young pets are typically more adaptable and less reliant on kibble, making it easier for them to embrace new foods. Directly switching from commercial processed meals to a raw diet due to higher bioavailability should not pose any issues for most pets.
When selecting proteins and ingredients, consider what your puppies and kittens are already familiar with based on their previous diet and keep the diet simple to avoid complexity. For instance, if their kibble was predominantly chicken, opt for chicken meat, chicken bone paste, and fixed offals like chicken liver and Fibre+ meal balancer. Aim to match the bone paste and offals with the meat type to maintain a single-protein diet if possible. For puppies and kittens under six months old, feeding them three meals a day is a great idea, as their stomachs are still developing. Keep a close eye on how they respond to their new diet.
If they struggle with larger chunks of meat, feel free to cut the food into smaller pieces to make mealtime easier. Also, remember not to serve the raw meal too cold straight out of the fridge; it’s best to warm it slightly by placing the meal pack in warm water (just ensure the water isn’t too hot to avoid cooking the meat).
Slow Transition Approach:
While many puppies and kittens adapt quickly to a raw diet, it’s essential to remember that each pet is unique, and not all young animals will thrive with an immediate transition. Some may experience digestive upset or reluctance to embrace new textures and flavours right away. For these pets, a gradual approach is often the best strategy.
Allow their gut condition to stabilise first with the previous diet they have done well on. Once the gut and stool condition are good, to implement a slow transition, start by feeding them 25% BOM BOM raw meal alongside 75% of their previous food. Over the course of three to four days, monitor their appetite and stool condition for any signs of gut upset. If their stool remains well-formed and they finish the raw portion consistently, you can gradually increase the ratio to 50:50. After a few more days, if all continues to go well, increase to 75% BOM BOM raw meal before finally transitioning fully to the raw diet over a two-week period. This gradual approach involves slowly incorporating raw food into their existing diet, allowing their digestive systems to adjust comfortably over time. By monitoring their reactions and making incremental changes, you can help ensure a smooth transition that supports their health and well-being.
Introducing your kitten or puppy to a raw diet is an excellent investment in their long-term health and well-being. With the right nutrition from an early age, you can ensure your furry friend enjoys a vibrant, energetic life. BOM BOM is here to support you every step of the way, making the journey of raising a happy and healthy pet a little easier.
