Why feed fresh?

What the science says, what the ingredients do, why we built BOM BOM the way we did.

What is fresh food?
Whole ingredients
Fresh food starts with real cuts of meat, organs, and vegetables. No rendered meat-meal, artificial supplements, or by-products.
Minimally processed
Whether served raw or gently cooked, fresh food skips high-heat processing, keeping more of its natural nutrients intact.
High in moisture
Fresh food is closer to what your pet would eat in nature. It holds far more moisture than dry food and so helps keep them properly hydrated.
Kept chilled or frozen
Instead of sitting on a shelf for months, fresh food is stored cold and served fresh. Similar to how you enjoy real food for yourself.
The science
What benefits does your pet get from fresh food?

BUILT AROUND MEAT, THE WAY THEIR BODIES NEED
Built around meat, the way their bodies expect
Dogs are facultative carnivores; cats are obligate carnivores. Both are adapted to derive most of their nutrition from animal sources. Fresh diets are built largely around meat and organs, supplying complete protein — the full amino acid profile needed for muscle, coat, and immune function.

MORE NUTRITION IS ABSORBED
More of the nutrition is absorbed
Bioavailability measures how much of a nutrient the body can absorb and use, not just how much is present. Nutrients from whole, minimally processed animal ingredients tend to be highly bioavailable, delivered in forms the body readily recognises and absorbs — so more of the meal is used rather than passed through.

MORE MOISTURE, BETTER HYDRATION
More moisture, better hydration
Carnivores are adapted to obtain most of their water from food, as they would from prey. Fresh food contains 60–75% moisture, against roughly 10% in dry food. This supports kidney and urinary health and aids digestion — particularly important for cats, whose low thirst drive leaves them prone to under-hydration.

GENTLER PROCESSING KEEPS NUTRIENTS INTACT
Gentler processing keeps nutrients intact
High-heat manufacturing degrades heat-sensitive nutrients and alters proteins and fats. Fresh food is raw or cooked at lower temperatures, preserving more nutrition in its natural form — and reducing the need for synthetic nutrients to be added back.

LOWER IN CARBOHYDRATES
Often lower in carbohydrate
Dry food requires starch to bind during extrusion, giving it a consistently high carbohydrate load. Fresh food has no such requirement and is often far lower, drawing energy from protein and fat instead — closer to a carnivore's natural metabolism. (Levels vary by brand, as some fresh recipes include grains or starchy vegetables.)

HIGHLY PALATABLE FOR FUSSY EATERS
Real food tends to be more appetising
Fresh food retains the natural aroma, texture, and flavour of real meat, which most pets find more palatable than dry food. For fussy eaters, sensitive cats, and older pets with declining appetites, this can determine whether a bowl is finished — and consistent intake supports overall condition.

Exploring co-feeding?

We'll help you do it right

Many pet parents start by mixing fresh with what they already feed. That works, as long as you do it gradually, because fresh and processed foods digest differently.
